Sony begins Vaio battery recall

Sony has announced details of the Vaio laptop battery recall it admitted last month it was going to initiate. And Toshiba has indicated it may sue the Japanese giant in order to gain recompense for any damage it alleges may have been done to its brand by its own battery recall.

Sony’s Vaio division announced on 29 September it was planning to recall batteries fitted into some of its notebook computers. At the time, it said it was pondering whether it would participate in the broader battery recall programme put in place independently by Sony’s battery manufacturing operation.

Sony Japan today asked anyone who owns a VGP-BPS2B(sony replacement battery can fit it,such as sony vgp-bps2c ,vgp-bps2a , vgp-bpl2c) or VGP-BPS3A battery pack to return the unit to the company. Some have been sold on their own, others were bundled with a variety of Vaio notebooks. The recall only applies to certain battery-pack serial numbers, Sony said.

Sony Japan said it expects to replace around 90,000 batteries in the Asia Pacific region. Other Sony subsidiaries have yet to announce recalls of their own, but Japanese newspaper the Nihon Keizai Shimbun today put the total at 300,000 Vaio batteries worldwide.

The claim comes a day after Toshiba said it may take Sony to court to seek compensation for the lost business and damage to its brand it alleges it has sustained since it issued an 830,000-unit recall last month.

Sony launches new mercury-free button battery

Tokyo, Japan electronics maker’s new mercury-free sony batteries are expected to eradicate 470 kilograms of mercury per year from its laptop battery production. Sony (NYSE:SNE) has developed a new mercury-free alkaline button battery, which it plans to commercialize in six different models. The new line is slated for an Oct. 10, 2009, launch at a cost of ¥200 (US$2) each.

The new battery mixes absorbent raw material into the battery’s cathode in place of mercury, and when combined with existing technology, prevents the build-up of hydrogen gas, the company claims.

In conventional alkaline button batteries, mercury is added to the anode material to suppress zinc corrosion and prevent the build-up of hydrogen. When mercury is not properly disposed, it can infiltrate the food chain, causing damage to humans and the environment.

Sony also makes a mercury-free silver oxide button laptop batteries, first commercialized in 2004 in 10 different models. Silver oxide batteries are used in everything from wrist watches and small-size thermometers to mobile game products.

The two mercury-free batteries are expected to eliminate 470 kilograms of mercury per year from Sony’s battery production.

Sony is also introducuing a new package design for its mercury-free alkaline and mercury-free silver oxide button batteries, and plans to promote them in its “mercury-free series,” according to a news release.The battery is more powerful than old laptop battery,such as sony VGP-BPS2C , VGP-BPS2A Battery,VGP-BPL2C battery .

In 2008, the European Union enacted tough environmental standards for batteries (see EU readies new battery mandates). The move imposes restrictions on and requires labeling of batteries that contain mercury.

Sony notebook VGN-TZ37N the first national test

1. Sony VGN-TZ37N hours of battery life?

10.8V 5800mAh batteries with six large-capacity lithium laptop battery, Sony VGN-TZ37N in MobileMark2007 very good performance test, the use of CD-ROM for DVD playback without interruption of the test results of 231 minutes, more than sony vgp-bps2c .while conventional business in a simulated office environment is the life of up to 248 minutes, more than four hours, be quite satisfactory. Therefore, we can predict the practical application of the state, with the power management mode, while the closure of a number of power components such as the 1394 interface, CD-ROM, network card, sound card, etc., you can further increase life and achieve life 5 hours should not be a problem.

2. Sony VGN-TZ37N weight advantage?

Weight from the following comparison can be seen that a single 11-inch Sony VGN-TZ37N control 1.2KG Despite the weight of the following, but it is not the world’s lightest, there are three more excellent in front of the model. But for a all-in-one notebook, the Sony VGN-TZ37N no doubt is one of the world, one of the best representative, after the Toshiba R500.

3. Sony VGN-TZ37N performance?

In PCMark2005 test, by the low-frequency low-voltage U7700 processor and 945GMS chipset, the impact of the scoring machine is not high. Overall, the Sony VGN-TZ37N lower performance of the machine, only to meet the most common business applications and entertainment operation, you want to run large-scale programs or games, then it is a bit on the chew.

Sony VGN-TZ37N hardware configuration

Sony VGN-TZ37N using Ultra Low Voltage Core 2 Duo processor U7700 (on the introduction of this processor will be tested in the following link in detail), with 945GMS chipset motherboard,powerful sony VGP-BPL11 is longer battery life than sony vgp-bps2c, a single built-in 2GB memory and 120GB hard drive machine configuration seems to respond to the general business office and entertainment applications should not be a problem. Advanced features in the provision of a camera, Bluetooth, fingerprint reader, wireless card, such as 4965, to the high-end business applications provides a powerful support.

Single 2GB memory standard, while here we can see that Sony VGN-TZ37N only a memory slot is not conducive to future upgrades.6 Cells 10.8V 5800mAh sony battery, 11.1-inch notebook for example should have sufficient.

Sony VGN-TZ37N Performance Test

Performance Test: U7700 processor

First of all, we first look at all of great concern to Intel Core 2 Duo U7700 processor: U7700 is Intel’s Ultra Low Voltage Core 2 Duo processor, the Merom core and 65-nanometer architecture, with 1.33GHz frequency, 2MB secondary cache and 533MHz front side bus frequency. From CPU-Z can be seen, the Core VID voltage is only 0.963V, power consumption is very low.

Super PI calculation in the single-threaded test, the results of the high and low frequency as the sort order, 1.33GHz GHz U7700 processor 1M of computing time 44.167 seconds, the performance in general. However, in tests of multi-core computing power CineBench R10 tests showed abnormal U7700, P7500 much higher performance than that point, it hard to understand.

Performance testing: battery life / whole

The ultra-portable mobile business notebooks Sony VGN-TZ37N, the battery life is of utmost concern to everyone one of the key points. 10.8V 5800mAh batteries with six high-capacity sony lithium battery, Sony VGN-TZ37N in MobileMark2007 very good performance test, the use of CD-ROM for DVD playback without interruption of the test results of 231 minutes,sony VGP-BPS2C, while conventional business in a simulated office environment is the life of up to 248 minutes, more than four hours, be quite satisfactory. I believe this is because of the use of large batteries, but also mainly due to ultra-low voltage U7700 processor and power bar.

Advantages:

  • 1. fashion design beautiful, sophisticated technology;
  • 2. mobile portability is quite prominent, proud warlords;
  • 3. laptop battery capacity is very high.
  • Disadvantages:

  • 1. the performance of the low side, only to meet the general business and entertainment applications;
  • 2. the high prices.
